Developmental and line editing can happen separately or as part of a larger editorial engagement. I begin by identifying what the project needs most, then work with you through focused rounds of revision and editing.
At the developmental level, we strengthen the architecture of the work: structure, argument, narrative, pacing, organization, and throughline.
At the line level, we strengthen the writing itself: clarity, rhythm, transitions, tone, voice, and sentence-level flow.
The goal isn't to make your writing sound like mine.
It's to help the strongest version of your work and your voice come through.

Before proposing an editing plan, I'll review enough of the manuscript and your goals to understand what the work actually needs.
2. We identify priorities
We'll establish whether the main work is developmental, line-level, or both—and what should happen first.
3. We work in focused rounds
Rather than trying to solve everything at once, we address the most important layer of the work and then move to the next.
4. You remain the author
Editing is collaborative. I'll question, suggest, challenge, explain, and sometimes push—but the decisions remain yours.

Do I need both developmental and line editing?
No. Some projects need substantial structural work; others need focused attention to the writing itself. Some need both. I’ll recommend the level of editing that makes sense for your project.
How does this differ from a Project Critique?
A Project Critique gives you an editorial assessment and priorities for revision that you carry out yourself. Developmental & Line Editing is hands-on: I work directly with you on the manuscript and its revisions.
Why hire an editor when AI can edit my writing?
AI can improve individual sentences, but strong editing requires understanding what the writing is trying to accomplish. I work at both the structural and sentence levels, making decisions about argument, pacing, emphasis, voice, and clarity while preserving what is distinctly yours. I’m not trying to make your writing sound better according to a generic model; I’m trying to make your writing work better.
How does the editing process work?
After reviewing your project, we’ll identify the areas that need the most attention and determine the appropriate scope. Editing is typically done in focused rounds, with opportunities for discussion and revision between rounds.
How much does it cost?
Developmental & Line Editing is custom-priced based on the length, complexity, and needs of the project. I’ll provide a clear scope and estimate before we begin.
Can you do only developmental editing or only line editing?
Yes. You can hire me for developmental editing, line editing, or a combination of both, depending on what your manuscript needs.
