Manuscript Critique
Is your book delivering the impact you intended? This comprehensive assessment shows you exactly how your material is landing so you can revise with confidence.
You’ve finished the draft. Now you need to know what’s actually working.
Maybe the argument is solid but the structure feels uneven. Maybe the middle drags. Or maybe you’ve revised it repeatedly but keep making small changes without addressing the larger problems.
Because not every manuscript requires a massive overhaul with developmental editing or line editing, this critique serves as our diagnostic starting point. Together, we will discover whether a deep developmental restructure is necessary, if a refined line edit is the right next step, or if your draft is already remarkably close to the finish line.
The Manuscript Critique gives you an experienced outside reader who can step back from the manuscript and see the whole thing, establishing a deep, collaborative foundation for our partnership from day one.
I’ll read your complete manuscript and evaluate the project’s structure, argument, organization, pacing, clarity, voice, and overall effectiveness. Then I’ll give you a detailed editorial assessment focused on the changes that will make the biggest difference.
This isn’t a developmental edit or a line edit. I’m not going to restructure chapters, mark up every sentence, or rewrite the manuscript for you just yet.
Instead, I’ll help you understand exactly what the manuscript needs—and why—so we can map out your next steps with total clarity.
What you’ll receive
A complete read of your manuscript: I’ll read the entire project as a reader and editor, paying attention not only to individual sections but to how the pieces work together.
A detailed editorial letter: You’ll receive a written assessment addressing the manuscript’s strongest elements, structural problems, gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
Prioritized revision guidance: Rather than leaving you with hundreds of disconnected comments, I’ll identify the issues that matter most and explain what I recommend doing about them.
A foundational partnership: This isn’t a one-off transaction. We are building a trusted relationship to ensure your voice and vision are supported through this draft and beyond.
What I look at
Depending on the project, my critique may address:
Overall structure and organization
Central argument or throughline
Narrative arc and pacing
Openings, endings, and transitions
Balance and development of sections or chapters
Repetition, gaps, or material that isn’t earning its place
Clarity and reader engagement
Voice and consistency
Places where the argument needs more evidence, explanation, or development
Whether the manuscript is delivering what it promises the reader
Flexibility for your next steps
The Manuscript Critique is designed for writers who want an editorial diagnosis and a clear sense of priorities, offering complete flexibility for how you choose to move forward.
Once you receive the editorial letter, you can take that guidance back to the manuscript and do the rewriting entirely on your own. Or, if the critique reveals that deeper work is required, we can use it to map out a targeted developmental or line editing engagement together (if your manuscript needs those services).
By requiring a critique first, we ensure you don’t spend thousands of dollars line-editing a draft that still needs structural work. Think of Phase 1 (Critique) as a diagnostic tool. Once we fix the foundation, Phase 2 (The Edit) will go faster, run smoother, and ensure your investment hits perfectly.
That’s the beauty of this approach: it gives you the exact tools you need to self-revise with confidence, while seamlessly opening the door to deeper professional editing if your manuscript calls for it.

Think of the Manuscript Critique as your diagnostic roadmap. Jumping straight into a full developmental edit without an objective, high-level evaluation often leads to paying for extensive, sentence-level or chapter-level restructuring that your book might not actually require.
By starting with a critique, we achieve three things:
Cost Efficiency: We identify exactly what is working and what isn’t. If your structure is already sound, a critique saves you from paying for a heavy developmental overhaul when a lighter line edit is all you need.
Targeted Strategy: If a developmental edit is necessary, the critique acts as our blueprint. It ensures we aren't wasting time on minor fixes when major structural shifts need to happen first.
Seamless Transition: This initial phase establishes our partnership. If we decide to move forward into a deeper developmental edit together, we will enter it with complete alignment, a shared vision, and a clear execution plan.
To make this a seamless investment in your book's future, I offer a Critique-to-Edit Pipeline: if you decide to transition into a full Developmental Edit, Line Edit, or Combined Edit with me, I will apply 50% of your critique fee as a direct credit toward the total cost of your next editorial phase. This ensures that you never pay for the same work twice, while giving you a clear, professionally evaluated blueprint to execute your revisions with total confidence.

AI can identify patterns and generate feedback, but an editorial critique requires judgment about which problems actually matter. I read your manuscript as a whole and distinguish between symptoms and underlying structural issues, then give you a prioritized plan for revision rather than a generic list of things to fix.

The Critique is designed for substantial or complete drafts. If you’re still developing the basic shape or direction of the project, the Conceptual Blueprint may be a better fit.
